440a Stainless Steel:
How Good is 440A Steel? - Knife Up
440A steel is a steel in the 440 family which contains a variety of other metals with varying properties. The others include 440B, 440C, and the less common 440F. All the 440 steels are considered truly stainless, but 440A has the highest corrosion resistance of all …
440a stainess steel AK Steel is a world leader in the production of at-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steel products, primarily for automotive, infrastructure and manufacturing, construction and electrical power generation and distribution markets.
The SAE steel grades system is a standard alloy numbering systems for steel grades maintained by SAE ... It is also known as marine grade stainless steel due to its increased resistance to chloride corrosion compared to type 304. 316 is often used for building nuclear ... Type 440A—has the least amount of carbon making this the most stain ...Carbon steel·
440A is a high carbon martensitic stainless steel that is AOD melted. This alloy can be heat treated to extremely high hardnesses. It has slightly less carbon than 440B and 440C giving it better machinability but less hardness.

Comparing Types of 440 Stainless Steel. When deciding on a material for your project, it’s critical to have a solid understanding of the different types 440 stainless steel and their unique benefits and features. While sharing several basic properties, as discussed above, 440 stainless steel types also differ in many ways. Stainless Steel 440A
440A vs 440C vs other choices for knife - Finishing
440A vs 440C vs other choices for knife 2002. Q. I have heard some disparaging remarks concerning 440A stainless steel, as compared to 440C,with regard to knifemaking. The SOG Navy Seal knife was tested against most major manufactures of this type of all-around "combat" and/or "survival" knife and chosen above all others.
440A Stainless Steel combines the superior corrosion resistance of chromium stainless steels with the excellent wear resistance of high carbon alloys. Cutlery is a major use of 440A. This grade of stainless steel is not easily blanked due to its higher strength and hardness, therefore, a more powerful press could be required to blank parts.
440C Stainless Steel Products and Specifications - Penn ...
Grade 440C stainless steel is a high carbon martensitic stainless steel. It has high strength, moderate corrosion resistance, and good hardness and wear resistance. Grade 440C is capable of attaining, after heat treatment, the highest strength, hardness and wear resistance of all the stainless alloys.
Stainless steel, first called “rustless steel,” is a combination of iron, chromium, carbon and several other metals. Metallurgists were seeking a better metal for gun barrels in order to over come problems caused by rapid overheating when the weapons were fired quickly numerous times.
440 series has three types, 440A, 440B and 440C. 440A is a relatively a low cost, highly corrosion resistant stainless steel. In China, Ahonest ChangJiang Stainless steel developed 440A modified 7Cr17MoV, by adding more element vanadium.Steel·
This is a low cost stainless steel. It is the most rust resistant of 440 steel, and 440C is the least rust resistant of the three. However, the 400 series are some of the most rust resistant knives out there. Popular 440A Knives: Microtech A.D.O. 440B Steel - Very similar to 440A but has a higher carbon content range (.75-.95%).
bladeforums› …› General Knife DiscussionApr 29, 2015· If you see ' 440 steel' then assume it's 440A .As there's been lots of 440A blades that gave a bad reputation. 440B is good for choppers as in my stainless kukri. Well HT'd 440C makes a good blade for a hunting knife.
If annealed for maximum softness, Types 440A, 440B, and 440C Stainless Steels can be moderately cold formed with only slightly more difficulty than the lower carbon, lower chromium grades of stainless steel. They can also be hot headed.
Stainless Steel Alloy 440 - Continental Steel & Tube Company
Type 440 Stainless Steel, which comes in four different grades, 440A, 440B, 440C, 440F, offers good corrosion resistance along with abrasion resistance. All grades can be easily machined in their annealed state, they also offer resistance to mild acids, alkalis, foods, fresh water, and air.
bladeforums› …› General Knife DiscussionAug 05, 2005· 440A vs. 420HC Discussion in 'General Knife Discussion' started by Thirteenth Star, Aug 1, 2005. Aug 1 ... It's too bad that many cheesy knives are labeled "440 stainless steel" when they are not really 440A at all. Even big name companies like SOG used to call their AUS-6A steel 440A. I was told that "440" is used to describe other types of ...
Some manufactures are intentionally vague about the type of steel they use. If the blade is marked "stainless steel", "surgical stainless" of just "440 stainless" you can bet it is 440A or 440B. 440C is a considerably better and more expensive steel and if a blade is made from 440C it will almost always be described as, or marked, "440C".
Grade 440C stainless steel is a high carbon martensitic stainless steel. It has high strength, moderate corrosion resistance, and good hardness and wear resistance. The following datasheet gives an overview of grade 440C stainless steel. Chemical Composition. The chemical composition of grade 440C stainless steel is outlined in the following table.
440A: this is a hardenable stainless steel alloy, hardenable to a higher hardness than 420 series stainless steels (which are only hardenable to 52 HRC). 440A has good corrosion resistance, and is used in less expensive bearings and in harder surgical tools (rare). It has 0.6 to 0.75 percent carbon, about the same carbon content as most steel ...
